Blame Instagram filters, but over the last few years I’ve become increasingly curious about what my natural pout would look like if I ever decided to take the plunge with injectable fillers. Recently, I’ve found myself pursing my lips in the mirror and wondering “…should I?” But because I’m not quite ready to plump things up with a needle, I’ve found the next best thing in the form of Too Faced’s Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper ($29).

Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper — $29.00

The product was designed to help people fake the appearance of lip injections without actually having to get lip injections, which makes it perfect for the “filler curious” crowd, like myself. “It has several ingredients that contribute to its success as a lip plumper,” says Michael Somenek, MD,  a facial plastic surgeon based in Washington, DC. “It contains Capsicum Frutescens Resin which is a wild chili pepper, and Cinnamal, the oil that gives cinnamon its spice. The irritants in these two ingredients cause a tingling or burning sensation when applied to the lips and can temporarily increase the size of the lips.”

Immediately after application, your lips start to tingle, which is a good sign that the plumping is starting to happen. This lasts for about a minute, but the effects last for hours on end. And after the tingling wears off, not only do my lips look plumped to three times their normal size, but they also feel soft and hydrated. This comes as a result of the formula’s combination of avocado oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E—each of which are known to by nourishing on their own, and together bring a triple threat of moisturization. “These ingredients progressively hydrate and maintain a soft and supple appearance to the lips,” says Dr. Somenek.

As far as finish goes, the gloss leaves behind a shiny, wet sheen with a subtle shimmer that reminds me of the Juicy Tubes I kept in my backpack in the early aughts, but with slightly more sparkle. It looks just as great on its own as it does layered over a matte lipstick, and despite its high-gloss appearance, it doesn’t ever feel sticky or goopy.

As long as this stuff is in my makeup bag, I can say with full confidence that there is no need for actual fillers in my future.

In the name of honesty, I've never been a fan of lip gloss. Most of them are too sticky, have less weartime than a lip balm, and offer little color pigment. But recently, one brand's gloss formula made me reconsider: the Too Faced Lip Injection Maximum Plumping Gloss, which just expanded from its original clear version into four new tinted shades.

While I may not be a full-blown lip gloss stan now, I do stand by this particular one for its ability to do more than just shine. The gloss is a potent upgrade of its predecessor, the brand's popular Lip Injection Extreme, and brings extra-strength plumping abilities and long-term results (we're talking hours here, people) to the lips. It's described by Too Faced as being "so powerfully effective, it's not for plumping rookies," since the brand's advanced volumizing technology immediately gets to work on visibly filling out even the smallest pouts.

I audibly gasped the first time I applied the hot pink version of the plumping gloss — one of the new color extensions, alongside light pink, lavender, and coral; my lips truly did appear fuller within several minutes, the effects of which lasted upwards of two hours, even after the shine had disappeared altogether. While it does sting upon application, the results are worth the 30 seconds of pain. It creates such naturally-looking, plump lips, it has easily become my most reached for lip product. Plus, it feels more like a nourishing lip oil than a classically sticky gloss.

But how can a plumping lip gloss provide such drastic changes? According to Dr. Margarita Lolis, board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group, the concept behind how they work their magic is pretty simple: plumping formulas latch onto the moisture of your lips to cause temporary swelling. "By irritating the lip and causing a mild allergic reaction, the lips swell, giving you a plumper pout. This is the reason why your lips may tingle, sting, or burn after application," she said. As dermatologist Dr. Hadley King chimed in, it's also because plumping formulas contain both moisturizing ingredients (such as humectants and emollients), alongside swell-inducing irritants that produce these effects.

With that in mind, Dr. Lolis advises that those with sensitive skin tread lightly with use. "The main goal of these glosses is to irritate your lips," she shared. "They are purposely formulated with known irritants such as cinnamon oil, capsaicin, and menthol. This is a problem for individuals with sensitive skin who are inherently prone to skin inflammation." Continued application of these ingredients can result in burning, flaking, or itching, so spacing out applications (approximately three to four hours apart) can keep these concerns from arising.

While I've personally yet to experience any dryness on my lips through countless applications, I always make sure to supplement with hydrating lip masks and balms to ensure I can continually reap the gloss' benefits whenever I please — and I please daily.

If you're looking for a quick way to achieve fuller lips, look no further than Too Faced's Lip Injection Maximum Plumping Gloss, which is available in five shades for $33 each.

While lip injections are done by dermatologists and specialists daily, there are a few other cost-effective ways to plump up your lips by way of makeup. With several lip-plumping glosses on the market today, it’s a process to figure out which ones are worth your money and which ones will give you ultimate results.

Ahead, I tested the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper and give you all the details on this very popular product.

About the Brand: Founded by Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson, Too Faced Cosmetics was created to embrace unapologetic glamour and self-expression within the beauty industry. Notable best-sellers include Better Than Sex Mascara, Born This Way Super Coverage Concealer, and Hangover 3-in-1 Setting Spray, to name a few.

I wear makeup daily and have tried a handful of plumping glosses. While they aren’t products that I wear often, I’ve tested a few formulas out to see how they work. For the most part, I go for a natural makeup look that consists of foundation, concealer, brow gel, mascara, and blush along with some highlighter. I prefer something more moisturizing on my lips as they tend to get chapped often, and I like to prevent that as much as possible.

Apply the lip gloss by swiping a few coats on with the doe-foot applicator on the wand. The formula glides on smoothly. You could wear the gloss on top of lipstick, but to get the full plumping effect I've found it’s best to apply it on bare lips.

The first few things I noticed about this gloss was that it feels more like a lip oil than it does a lip gloss, and it has a strong, sweet fragrance. The scent is that of a sweet dessert, like cookies or cake.

Testing Insight

There is absolutely no sticky residue whatsoever, and it glides seamlessly on the lips.

The second most notable thing about this gloss is that it starts to tingle right after application, and the first few times I applied it, the tingling lasted well over an hour. The tingling sensation does take some getting used to as it can feel intense in the beginning.

Since I used the clear color, I didn’t expect my lips to change color, but they ended up turning a soft pink shade after wearing the product for only 20 minutes. My lips, for the most part, stayed the same size, and I didn’t notice any extreme plumping result. (I have medium-sized lips, FYI.)

Overall, the tint of the gloss ended up being nice, and it felt quite soft and hydrating. There is absolutely no sticky residue whatsoever, and it glides seamlessly on the lips.

At $29, this product isn’t exactly budget-friendly—you might want to consider whether or not you'll use something like a plumping lip gloss on a daily basis to justify the cost. For the results I attained, I would value it slightly lower since the plumping results I received were quite minimal.

Buxom Cosmetics Full-On Plumping Lip Polish Gloss ($21): This plumping lip gloss promises high shine and a noticeable tingling sensation. Peptides allow for plumping results while vitamins A and E help nourish lips and keep them hydrated.

PYT Beauty Plumping Lip Gloss ($15): This clean plumping gloss is formulated without petroleum, parabens, and paraffin, to name a few ingredients. Avocado oil, sunflower seed, and mango seed butter allow the gloss to glide on smoothly and keep lips hydrated throughout the day.

Winky Lux Pucker Up Lip Plumper ($18): One swipe of this juicy gloss is all it takes to feel the tingling sensation. The finish has a high shimmer and a fragrance that smells of delicious lemon cake or pink lemonade.

Final Verdict

If you're looking to splash some cash to test out Too Faced's Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper, I say give it a shot and see what happens. While the plumping results were minimal, the soft color, nourishing application, and tingling sensation bring a unique change compared to other lip gloss formulations.
